Knaresborough Castle, North Yorkshire, England

The origins of Knaresborough centre on its royal castle, although the ruins you see here may not belong to the first building on the site. In fact, the present remains were part of a building constructed between 1310 and 1340 using the same type of limestone as the nearby St. John's Parish Church. The rectangular keep captured above could have served as a gatehouse between the inner and outer wards of the castle and is the only remaining part of a structure ravaged by Cromwell during the Civil War.
