With the discussion about geology that accompanied the foundation of the South Downs National Park, it perhaps is surprising to see the dual character of its Peak District counterpart. After all, the contrast between the landscapes of the gritstone moors and the limestone dales is striking. In the heart of the latter is the pleasant village of Tideswell with its elaborate church. On a December morning, I tried my photographic luck with the "Cathedral of the Peak" and I am left wondering if it might have been better to wait until the sun was a little higher in the sky but a walk to Bakewell beckoned. The church was built between 1320 and 1370 using the proceeds of healthy trade in wool at the time, even if the Black Death intruded to make things take longer.
