Blencathra, Threlkeld, Cumbria, England

On the eastern approach to Keswick, it is impossible to miss Blencathra. As with anything that looms as large as it does, it does help to give yourself a spot distance from its foot to make any photograph do it more justice. This late autumn scene was seen on a descent down the side of Castlerigg Fell after a memorable day spent taking in sights from locations such as Ashness Bridge, High Seat and Bleaberry Fell, some of which were more sodden than others. Blencathra may have been a hazy sight but whatever available light there was only helped to make the photo work.

You'd be tempted that Blencathra would be a quieter hummock with Skiddaw being a distraction for those starting out from Keswick but there was one piece of evidence of its lack of hillwalking neglect. That unfortunately may have been erosion but a controversial engineered path (some despised it so much that they called the zig-zag thing an autobahn) has been in place for a few years now. The hill has yet to see my footfall so that's something that maybe I should address. One thing that I don't plan to try up there is scrambling but there are many who love just that kind of thing and I'll happily leave them to it.
