A spot of waiting was in order before this scene was lit in a way that made it amenable for photographic capture. My vantage point was what was once the only crossing point of the Dee near Chester and hence its only access from Wales. Even today, there is still a breech in the old city walls for allowing traffic in and out though it would have been more secured in olden times. Another feature of the bridge is its narrowness, something that necessitating the building of the Grosvenor Bridge as a replacement. That's not to say that road doesn't use the older one anymore but it's no longer the main thoroughfare.

In the distance above, there's another bridge to be seen, the Queen's Park footbridge. Beyond the weir and its warning buoys, there are some of the pleasure craft that offer to carry visitors for a fee. The white ones nearer the shore were to offer evening entertainment as well as a river cruise as I discovered later in the day. The river may be crossed by those with more of a sense of purpose about their journeys but those that perambulate along it are in a more leisurely state of mind.
