Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Éire

Moving south of the river Liffey, we come to Dublin's oldest building. There has been a church on the site since 1040 when it was founded by the Danes. It was begun again in 1172 and reached something like its current size. Very little of current building dates from then though, and the tower you see above dates from around 1600. Of its predecessors, one was lost to fire and another collapsed during a storm. However, most of the current structure owes its origins to Gilbert Edmund Street's extensive restoration between 1871 and 1878, something that cost £250m and was bankrolled by Dublin distiller Henry Roe.
