Looking towards the Gap of Dunloe from Molls Gap, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Éire

If you were to join a coach tour of the Ring of Kerry, there are a number of honeypot stopping points that are traditional between Killarney and Kenmare or Sneem. Ladies View is one of these with its allowing the chance to look down along the Lakes of Killarney as they punctuate the valley floor below. Another would be Moll's Gap. If bound for Kenmare this 232 m high pass is the last chance of glimpsing Macgillycuddy's Reeks on your journey. There's plenty to see from this point and, should the conditions come right, it might be tricky to drag yourself away.

It has taken me a little time and courage to reach the conclusion that the very obvious cleft in the photo is none other than the upper reaches of the Gap of Dunloe, another famous Killarney beauty spot. The bump that is Crann Beithe stops you peering down into that valley floor but the steep slopes of Purple Mountain on the right and the foothills of the Reeks on the left cannot be missed.
