A Wanderer's Photo Gallery
One of the things that gets me exploring Britain and Ireland is the prospect of bringing away some pleasing photos of my own making with me. Not only has that fostered the growth of an interest in hillwalking and cycling but it also has driven me to further the photography itself. All that has created the library of images from which the collections that you find here have been drawn.

The Crescent, Buxton, Derbyshire, England

The Crescent, Buxton, Derbyshire, England

The ultimate centrepiece of Buxton, and the fifth Duke of Devonshire's major contribution to Buxton architecture, is the Crescent and this is the view of it from The Slopes. Because of the proximity of the spring, this used to be the centre of attention when Buxton was a thriving spa town. For that reason, the building used to contain three hotels and several baths but was neglected in recent times and has been undergoing restoration in the last few years. As if to emphasise the presence of the spring, you will find St. Anne's Well in front of The Crescent, at the foot of The Slopes. This is one of the rare locations where you take the spa water for free. Incidentally, the dedication of the well to St. Anne is a Christianisation of its previous dedication to the Celtic goddess Santan, a fact that emphasises the history of the place.
