Continuing further up the east coast of Mull will bring you to its main town Tobermory, in the northeast of the island. It has one of the most appealing harbours on the west coast of Scotland even if I think Portree on the Isle of Skye gives strong competition in this regard. The plethora of houses painted in bright colours are the main basis for its appeal although the setting helps too. It was founded in 1788 as a fishing village by the British Society for Encouraging Fisheries. However, this never really worked out and the place only survived because of the influx of people during the Clearances.
