A good few years after starting to explore its shores, I finally sampled some of Mull's wilder scenery. It may be an island but there's stuff there that wouldn't be out of place on the mainland and the cause of all of this is volcanic activity back in geologic history. To reach it, I crossed the island on foot from Salen over to Knock where I left the road to pick up the track running by Loch Bà. Around the western end of the loch, things remain fairly civilised with evidence of habitation along with a smattering of trees and cattle lazing in the sunshine. By the eastern end, things have developed a much more remote feel and it is impossible to avoid the feeling of immersion among the hills.
