Here is our first glimpse of the terrain around Glen Coe. Buachaille Etive Mor is a much photographed mountain; having a distinctive and recognisable appearance helps as does a location like this. The name means the great shepherd of Etive and it is not so much a single mountain but a group of them containing several Munro "tops" (peaks of height 914 m (3000 feet) or more). The massif heads Glen Etive which terminates on the shores of Loch Etive, the sea loch into which the River Etive flows.
For those of you who have already viewed the Argyll gallery, you will recognise the name Loch Etive from before and it is the same loch that is referenced here. Journeying from Taynuilt to Kingshouse Hotel on foot is at least a two day affair with a stop over at a bothy on the shores of the loch; unless you are into speed walking, a journey of nearly 40 miles is not usual for a full day's hiking.
