The Royal Mile is so called because it links the two royal residences in Edinburgh, the castle and Holyrood Palace. Only the latter is still used by the Royal Family whenever they visit Edinburgh. The photo shows part of the High Street section of the Royal Mile. This is the main thoroughfare in Edinburgh's Old Town and is an area with a long history. One of the more historical buildings is the white house jutting out into the street near the back of the picture. This house was occupied by the sixteenth century reformist preacher, John Knox, and is now maintained as a museum.
