Ross Castle, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Éire![]() |
|
We move to Killarney in the south of the county. Our first stop in the Killarney area is at Ross Castle, one or two miles outside the town although it doesn't look it. The building itself dates from the fifteenth century and is now under the care of the Irish state. It is remarkably well preserved, considering that it was the last place in Munster to fall (in 1652) to the army left by Oliver Cromwell. Its site, beside Lough Leane (pronounced "lane") is idyllic and fantastic views of Macgillycuddy's Reeks are possible across the lake.
