Caernarfon Castle, Gwynedd, Wales

Continuing along the North Wales coast eventually brings you to the Menai Straits between Anglesey (or Ynys Môn in Welsh) and the Welsh mainland. On the mainland side lies the university town of Bangor and travelling south brings you to the pleasant town of Caernarfon, whose public transport links make it a good base for exploring the western side of Snowdonia.

It is also home to one of Wales' quintessential landmarks: Caernarfon Castle. It is a thirteenth century affair, as are the walls surrounding the old part of the town. The castle itself was part of a network built by the English King Edward I to control Snowdonia and its inhabitants. Fortifications have stood here for longer than that though and the Romans had a fort nearby when they held sway over the area. Its most recent claim to fame is the 1969 investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales.
