Sgurr nan Gillean from Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland

Sgurr nan Gillean from Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland

In spite of all appearances to the contrary, this photo was taken only a mile from Portree's town centre. Thanks to Skye's heavily indented coastline, it shows another view of Sgurr nan Gillean et al. On my first visit in 1999, it came as a surprise to me that I should see part of Cuillin from Portree itself.

This view was captured in 2002 on an impromptu visit at the end of a westward trek across Scotland away from the inclement weather then encroaching from the east: my journey here took me through Edinburgh, Stirling, Callander and Fort William and was my annual trek to the Scottish Highlands that year. The next day, I left the island in its misery on my way back to Edinburgh where I spent the rest of the (August bank holiday) weekend.
